Tourist Attractions in Bunya Mountains, Qld

Bunya Mountains is a small town located on the southeastern part of Queensland State of Australia. The area has been named after the Bunya Mountains, a set of peaks in the Eastern Highlands of Australia. The locality lies roughly in the intersection of Western Downs Region and the South Burnett Region in Queensland. The residential areas and the agricultural lands are located on the southwestern part of the locality whereas the northeastern part mostly covers the Bunya Mountains National Park.

Bunya Mountains is named after the Bunya pine tree, a local name given by the Aboriginal communities. It was a gathering place for many different Aboriginal ethnic groups scattered around Queensland and New South Wales. They used to celebrate a feast with the Bunya nuts that they collected from the Bunya pine trees. 

The Bunya area has different seasons resulting intense varieties in the rainforest color. On a clear night, the sky becomes alive with the countless stars while the glimpse of the city lights of Dalby, Oakey, Kingaroy and Toowoomba are visible from Fishers Lookout. In an early morning walk, tourists can see the misty mountain sceneries as well as enjoy the fresh and clean highland air.

Bunya Mountains is a paradise for the bird watchers where there are about 215 species of birds can be found. King parrots, Crimson Rosella and Satin Bowerbirds are commonly seen birds in this area. A wide variety of faunas are also the inhabitants of this region such as Wallabies, Pademelons, scrub turkeys, koalas, echidnas etc.

Most of the area of Bunya Mountain is a protected wildlife area. Therefore the main tourist attraction of Bunya is the Bunya Mountain National Park which is the second oldest national park in Queensland. It has been established in 1908.

The park has picnic areas, walking trails, camping grounds and hilltop viewpoints. It also has accommodation facilities for group and families.
