The ancient name of Byron Bay was 'Cavvanbah' given by the Aboriginal tribes which mean 'meeting place'. Captain James Cook later named this area after one of his fellow sailor John Byron.

The first jetty in Byron Bay was built in 1886. Cape Byron Lighthouse was built at the easternmost corner of Australia in 1901. At the late 1800s, the dairy industry started to spread in this region.
